Self-Assessment Essay

Reflecting upon my personal and academic growth during this semester in our Writing for Engineering course, I am met with an intertwining dance of theoretical concepts, rhetorical terms, and the practical manifestations they have crafted within my progression as a writer. Indeed, the transformative journey I embarked upon at the beginning of the semester has seen me morph from an ambitious yet directionally uncertain writer to a more refined, intentional, and purpose-driven communicator. This metamorphosis has been primarily driven by four course learning outcomes: enhancing strategies for reading, drafting, and revising; negotiating writing goals and audience expectations; engaging in genre analysis and multimodal composing; and strengthening source use practices.

1. Enhancing Strategies for Reading, Drafting, and Revising

Starting with the first learning outcome, I reflect on how my strategies for reading, drafting, and revising have evolved over the semester. I entered the course with a somewhat rigid approach to the writing process: a single draft, light revisions, and final submission. This linear approach often left me frustrated when my work did not adequately express the depth and nuance of my thoughts. Through the course, I have gained an appreciation for the iterative nature of writing. A shift in perspective and approach occurred when I realized writing isn’t a one-shot endeavor but rather an ongoing process of gradual refinement and improvement. This newfound understanding crystalized during my work on the lab report on the effect of a neodymium magnet on electronics, where several drafts were meticulously developed, each one adding an extra layer of polish and clarity to the final product.

Moreover, I came to appreciate the intertwined relationship between reading and writing, particularly the value of diligent note-taking during reading. This has provided a more comprehensive and textured foundation for my written work. As I engaged more deeply with my reading, the quality of my drafts noticeably improved, resulting in final pieces marked by greater clarity, logical flow, and persuasive arguments.

2. Negotiating Writing Goals and Audience Expectations

The second learning outcome that played a pivotal role in my transformation was understanding and negotiating writing goals and audience expectations. It’s easy to see writing as a solitary activity, a platform for self-expression, without considering how it will be received by others. However, this course underscored that my writing is not just a monologue but a dialogue with my readers. This paradigm shift led me to appreciate writing as a negotiation of genre, medium, rhetorical situation, and audience expectations. My work on different assignments, such as the lab report and self-assessment essay, required me to adapt my writing style to different audience expectations and formats. This newfound awareness and flexibility have significantly broadened my ability to communicate effectively across various contexts and genres.

3. Engaging in Genre Analysis and Multimodal Composing

Thirdly, genre analysis and multimodal composing have been pivotal in shaping my development as a writer. This course facilitated a deep dive into the nuances of different genres, understand their conventions, and how to apply them effectively in my writing. Working on my lab report, I immersed myself in several scientific reports to understand their structure, language, tone, and overarching purpose. The insights gained were instrumental in crafting a report that was not only accurate and concise but also fitting of its genre, achieving the perfect blend of scientific rigor and accessibility.

Furthermore, the course emphasized the importance of multimodal composing, expanding my repertoire to navigate and combine different modes of communication. This has brought a new level of versatility and appeal to my writing, allowing me to adapt to the demands of an increasingly digital and diverse communication landscape.

4. Strengthening Source Use Practices

Finally, the fourth learning outcome has seen me significantly strengthen my source use practices. This course has underscored the importance of effectively using and citing sources, not merely as a compliance exercise but as

a necessary measure for providing credibility, context, and respect for original authors’ work. Evaluating, integrating, quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing, synthesizing, analyzing, and citing sources were skills that were deeply ingrained throughout the course, shaping my understanding and application of academic integrity. In my lab report, for example, I painstakingly ensured each source was correctly cited, contributing to the credibility and reliability of my analysis.

In conclusion, the journey through this course has been more than an academic exercise; it has been a personal odyssey of growth and self-improvement. It has honed my reading and drafting strategies, broadened my understanding of genre, audience, and the communicative purpose of writing, and solidified my research and citation skills. As I move forward, I do so with the confidence that my writing skills have been refined and that I possess the necessary tools to tackle future writing challenges. I am eager to continue refining these skills, deepening my understanding of the beautiful and powerful art of writing.
